CanWest integration no sure thing

Article Abstract:

Winnipeg, Manitoba-based CanWest Global Communications has entered into an agreement to purchase the National Post and the other properties of Southam Inc for $3.5 billion. CanWest Global expects to get a half-share of the National Post as well as 13 major-market dailies if the acquisition is allowed by the Competition Bureau and the federal cabinet. The deal also covers over 130 community papers and shoppers, 85 trade magazines and Hollinger's national sales arm, ADitus.

Telemedia sale ad fallout unknown

Article Abstract:

Montreal's Transcontinental Publications Inc has acquired Telemedia for C$150 million. Transcontinental's management will have to market its newly acquired publications to advertisers. Pres Andre Prefontaine said his company will offer "packages" to advertisers and that their acquisition of Telemedia will be advantageous for them. Telemedia pres Francois de Gaspe Beaubien said he could not speculate on what Transcontinental is planning for them.

Thomson's latest selloff

Article Abstract:

The Canada-based Thomson Newspapers has been offered for sale by its parent Stamford, Conn.-based Thomson Corp. as it has decided to drop from the newspaper business. The newspaper company has been offered for sale since February 15, 2000 by Thomson Corp. which seeks to be the global provider of information and solutions for businesses and professionals. The company intends to sell 55 dailies and 75 community papers, most of them in the US.
