Commerzbank muscles in on the Mittelstand

Article Abstract:

Commerzbank AG (Germany) is planning to expand its operation into equity and mezzanine financing for the German market in 1999. The bank has employed some outside expertise to help them launch their new initiative. It is happy to invest in small size ventures, such as telecoms and will consider equity partnerships. Commerzbank plans to sell it financing services via its branch outlets. Some US firms are also planning to invest in the major European economies. Dresdner have been operating in the financing market since 1996, but has found raising funds from the German investors problematic.

Societe Generale

Article Abstract:

Societe Generale's acquisition finance business underwent widespread restructuring in 1996, with the teams based in Paris, France, merged with those in London, England. Rob Bonfield became chief of acquisition finance, with teams based throughout Europe all reporting to him. Societe Generale claims to be well positioned to know local practices in various key European markets. Societe Generale has been involved in between 25-30 European transactions annually during 1990-1997, with teams operating a 'relationship-based' strategy.
