Canadian departs from Amex

Article Abstract:

Canadian Airlines International has ended its association in American Express' Membership Rewards program, where it gave members the opportunity to exchange their Amex points for Canadian Plus frequent-flier points for the past eight years. The airline gave no reason for its decision. However, Alan Stark, CEO of Amex Bank of Canada, said he was suprised that Canadian would turn its back on an ongoing source of revenue. Amex Bank is allowing customers to use their points for travel certificates for up to 50% of the value of the air tickets.

Competition lives

Article Abstract:

New entrants to Canada's airline industry would compete with the merged Air Canada-Canadian Airlines operations on price but not on service. It would be useless competing with Air Canada on service due to the size of its network and the frequency of its flights. For instance, airlines WestJet, Canada 3000, Royal Aviation and the planned CanJet are all offering low-fare flights. Air Canada may also engage in sales in the shoulder periods.
