Canal Plus confirms loss of $30.8 million for 1998

Canal Plus SA acknowledged that it suffered a 28 million euros ($30.8 million) loss for the 1998 year. In 1997, the company reported 233 million euros in net profits. Canal Plus's foreign businesses continued to be a heavy burden on earnings. The company also reported considerably lower one-time gains in 1998. Canal Plus's extraordinary gains dropped to 76 million euros in 1998. In 1997, the company's extraordinary gains were 340 million euros.

Telewest to launch digital services as cable-TV subscriptions increase

Article Abstract:

Telewest Communications PLC announced its plans to begin offering digital services in approximately seven months. The company also said there was greater cable television demand. Telewest ordered up to 100,000 digital decoders from Pace Micro Technology PLC in order to provide digital television services. The company will start high speed cable modem Internet access just before it launches the digital services.
