Uncommon charms

Article Abstract:

Berman Guedes Stretton Architects has designed a graduate common room suite for St John's College, Oxford, England. The rooms have been built above existing squash courts, and are separated by a narrow lawn from the 1976 Sir Thomas White residential building. Problems with site access prompted the decision to use a steel frame structure, the elements of which could be brought to the site as smaller units. There are three rooms at first floor level, with balconies off both smaller end rooms. On the mezzanine, there are two computer rooms separated by an open gallery space protruding over the main central area of the common room.

Explorations in geometry, shadow and topography

Article Abstract:

The designs of Japanese architectural firm Ushida Findlay Partnership (UFP) draw on the different cultural backgrounds of its partners, Kathryn Findlay, who is Scottish, and Eisaku Ushida, who is Japanese. This combination generates a futuristic, sensual and organic creativity which makes use of both Japanese and European construction methods. UFP's designs have an underlying rigid geometry, although plans and elevations are usually free form.
