Capital flaws

Article Abstract:

South Korea has seen a large number of bankruptcies among smaller companies, though larger firms have been able to borrow. There is a need to reform capital markets in South Korea since smaller firms are seen as important for economic growth and employment. Banks have lacked adequate credit-risk analysis, since they have relied on governments to provide guarantees. The conglomaterates have acquired stakes in non-bank financial firms, and this is a cause for concern for those seeking reform of capital markets.

Thaied up in knots

Article Abstract:

The decision of the Thai central bank to float the baht is a positive move towards the recovery of the banking industry but much more is needed to alleviate the problems of the Thai financial system. The current economic problems of the country were brought about by decades of misdirected monetary policy that are just coming to light. The government needs to introduce follow-up monetary policies so that the devaluation of the baht yields a positive result for the entire economy.
