The Bank of Scotland worked with NatWest Equity Partners in the successful deal to purchase VAW Carbon. The Bank of Scotland provided the 100 million deutschmarks to finance the deal which was finally agreed in Oct 1998. The graphite and carbon products company was located in Germany. It was being sold by VAW Aluminium. The Bank of Scotland had to take into consideration the large amount of investment required to bring the company up to date. It also had to be sure the management would be able to oversee the closure of parts of the business whilst it was being modernized.
