Article Abstract:

Kit Allsopp Architects of London, England, won the 2.1 million pounds sterling contract to design the Lodge nursing home for the long-term care of the elderly mentally ill in the Hackney area of London, England. The home aims to generate a feeling of security and familiarity for the residents, with carers, residents and staff believing the spacious and bright environment is a dramatic improvement on the previous facilities. The design and construction of the building are described.

A sensitive container for music

Article Abstract:

Van Heyningen and Haward, architects, won the design competition for the Jacqueline du Pre building at St HIlda's College, Oxford. The building was designed mainly for music practice and performance, with the capability to be used for conferences. The balanced acoustics of the recital room were achieved by the rectangular shape with enough height to provide adequate volume.

Animal cracker: Wharmby Kozdon Architects' children's zoon in Regent's Park houses 40 different species on a narrow site next to Lubetkin's Penguin Poo, using mainly sustainable materials to comply with London Zoo policy

Article Abstract:

Wharmby Kozdon Architects designed the children's zoo at Regent's Park for London Zoo. The plan focused on a courtyard building, an existing mess building and the Camel and Llama House. The courtyard buildings inlude several small enclosures as well as the Pet Care Centre, and the mess building roof was extended to link with the Reindeer Den.
