Carrots, not sticks: the West turns to aid in the fight against child labour

Article Abstract:

Sialkot in Pakistan is famous for producing high quality, hand-sewn soccer balls, but as many as 8,000 children work in the city's sporting goods factories. However factory owners, western sporting goods companies, human-rights agencies and the International Labour Organization are working together to eliminate child labour and provide schools and social programmes for the children. The issue of child labour has divided governments in the east and west and the initiative could signal a wider effort to help the 250 million child labourers estimated to be working throughout the world.

It's our party

Article Abstract:

Member countries are arguing about the enlargement of Asem, the Asia-Europe Meeting. The participants of the Asia-Europe dialogue, which began in 1996, originally intended the group to include European Union countries and the richest East Asian nations. India, Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand now say the next meeting, due in April 1998, should include all Asian countries. Most European countries are keen to strengthen their presence in Asia and support the proposal, but Asian members feel enlargement should not be rushed.

Turning on the charm: France warms to Japanese companies

Article Abstract:

France is making concerted efforts to attract Japanese investors and to alter its image of a protectionist state. French PM Pierre Beregovoy has been primarily responsible for the improvement in economic relations between France and Japan. He has simplified the application procedures for foreign investment and the process of takeover of French companies and has awarded top priority to Japanese investors. Japanese firms such as Canon have taken advantage of these changes and expanded their operations in France.
