Carry on, Matron

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Conservative Party proposes a greater role for pirvate insurance in health care as a way to improve the performance of the National Health Service (NHS). The argument is that this will attract funds, though more money will not necessarily improve performance. One proposal is for tax relief to encourage private insurance, but this may only benefit those who would have used private insurance anyhow. There is a stronger case for extending charges, and there is public support for payment for health care by people who can afford to do so.

Hard choices

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) has an annual drugs budget of 4.4 billion pounds sterling, increasing by 9% each year. There is concern as to how the NHS will deal with demand for the anti-impotence treatment, Viagra, anti-obesity treatments, and expensive treatments for cancer and multiple sclerosis. Public opinion could play a part in deciding priorities for treatment, but this may not provide the best guide. A survey in Oregon found that more importance was attached to breast enlargements than to mending broken legs.
