Case study: easyJet's $500 million gamble

Article Abstract:

low-cost airline easyJet was perceived as a model organisation within two years of launch in November 1995, with owner Stelios Haji-ioannou proceeding with a $500 million order for 12 new Boeing aircraft in July 1997 despite intense, aggressive competition from larger airlines. EasyJet took Dutch airline KLM to court for anti-competitive practices and simultaneously raised brand awareness for easyJet. EasyJet also published reasons for its opposition to British Airways' own low-cost airline in leading British newspapers and successfully turned public opinion in easyJet's favour.

Germany's biggest offer of the year

Article Abstract:

Foreign institutions will receive 36% of the 143 million shares offered by the German government in airline Lufthansa. The offer, equivalent to 37.5% of Lufthansa, was more than two times subscribed. Around 400,000 domestic retail investors will receive 51% of the offer, with domestic institutions gaining 12% and Lufthansa staff 1%. The German government will earn at least DM1 billion more from the sale than the DM1.5 billion predicted in the 1997 budget.
