Wake up, it's election time

Article Abstract:

Local elections will be held in Iran on Feb 26 1999, the first such elections in the country. President Muhammad Khatami aims to transfer some power to Iran's people, though voter indifference could be a problem, as well as resistance from some conservative elements. Opponents of the president are able to veto candidates and have sought to exclude some for lack of adherence to the theocratic principles of the regime. Many independents are standing, but allies of the president are often not well known or as popular as he is. There are 330,000 candidates and some 200,000 seats.

Time matures

Article Abstract:

Iran is undergoing reforms which has involved cultural and political changes resulting from the policies of President Muhammad Khatami. The minister for Islamic guidance and culture, Ataollah Mohajerani, has expressed admiration for the author Milan Kundera, and a belief that artistic freedom should be allowed. There is still opposition from conservatives in Iran, but there is greater confidence among reformers. Some of the reformers include men who were previously involved in events of 1979 when Iran underwent a revolution.
