Cashing in on class

Article Abstract:

Bribing to gain admission into prestigious schools is a widespread practice in South Korea because excellent academic credentials are considered tickets to acceptance into Korean society. This trait came into public focus in 1991 when Ehwa, the most prestigious women's university in South Korea, was involved in a bribery case. However, the practice is not entirely the fault of university officials, who have to constantly look for money to improve facilities. The government gives a paltry 2% subsidy to universities compared with Japan's 15%, while economic support from alumni is also sorely lacking.

One step backward: foreign firms prepare for Peking's import clampdown

Article Abstract:

The austerity program that China implemented in Jun 1993 will affect foreign companies that export products to China. Car makers will be particularly stricken since the program prohibits all vehicle imports for six months. Only those Chinese customers who held import permits before the program went into effect will be allowed to buy foreign cars. South Korean companies, which are prominent among exporters to China, will suffer especially badly. However, the import clampdown is not expected to last long are to affect a wide variety of goods.

Return on service: Asia's retailers strengthen as middle class grows

Article Abstract:

Katherine Newman of Kleinwort Benson Securities Asia and Peter Phillips of Fidelity Investments discuss the prospects for investment in Asia's retail sector. They believe that Asia's rising gross domestic product and emerging middle class hold out great promise for the growth of the region's retail services. Investors should look for retailers with centralized delivery systems, order processing and information systems; Hongkong's Giordano is one such retailer. Hongkong's Dairy Farm is also recommended.
