Celebrating seventy-five years of the Building Research Establishment

Article Abstract:

The UK's Building Research Establishment (BRE), which is currently celebrating its 75th anniversary, is currently sponsored by the department of the environment, although it has been the responsibility of other government departments at various stages of its history. It has worked in areas including construction materials, structural and civil engineering and the construction process. It aims to continue to encourage progress in the technology and performance of buildings.

Earliest concrete building to be saved

Article Abstract:

Three-storey Grade II Listed Building Kiln Warehouse in Newark, Nottinghamshire, is about to be rennovated by canal associations British Waterways. The building, which was built around 1857 using Portland cement, was partially burnt down in 1992. The 1.7 million pounds sterling restoration project is to be financed by associations English Heritage, English Partnerships and British Waterways.

Celebrating the art of building

Article Abstract:

Associated Architects was chosen to refurbish the Birmingham College of Art, to transform it into a modern art school. Public spaces were returned to their original appearance, and new additions including steel mezzanine floors and glass lifts are sympathetic to the building. The aim was to preserve the Gothic form.
