Cereal makers find marketing in Europe yields mixed results

Article Abstract:

Sales of all cereal brands in Italy have risen 150% to 30,000 tons in 1997 from 12,000 tons in 1993, accordingto market research firm Euromonitor. Italy's per capita consumption of 500 grams annually could still continue to grow since it is relatively a spoonful compared with the 7.6 kilograms per capita consumption in Britain and 4.4 kilos in the US. Battle Creek, MI-based Kellogg's Co. is eyeing growth opportunities in the European continent since its market share declined to 33% from a high of 45% in the US mainland. To build brand awareness may only be secondary to Kellogg's Co.'s strategy of altering eating habits in order to succeed in Italy.
