Character building: Chuan's position firms as confidence motion fizzles

Article Abstract:

Thailand's Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai and his five-party coalition government survived opposition no-confidence motions in parliament in Jun 1993. In fact, the political skill with which Chuan defended himself and his government against vituperative attacks greatly strengthened his coalition and personal reputation. The attempt to besmirch Chuan by investigating his marital life backfired when Chuan spoke movingly of his rise from obscurity. Chuan's government will now face pressure to sustain Thailand's economic growth.

Bad chemistry: Chamlong and the military set for new confrontation

Article Abstract:

Former governor and ex-military Chamlong Srimuang plans to run for the post of Prime Minister of Thailand. This development may spark another confrontation with the military establishment who currently heads the country. The military and the politicians it supports are not popular with the press. If the political contest favors Chamlong, there is sure to be a violent reaction from the military against the pro-democracy forces which Chamlong represents.

The quiet fixer

Article Abstract:

Thailand's Charoen Bhatanadamrongchit is respected, feared and courted by most of his country's politicians. Charoen's clout stems from his tremendous wealth. He is of Chinese descent and practically rules northeast Thailand as its politicians' godfather. His political support transcends ideology and popular sentiment. He is reportedly supportive of ex-Prime Minister Chatichai Choonhavan's candidacy in the Sep 13, 1993 general elections.
