Charles Kades

Article Abstract:

Charles Kades was named by General Douglas MacArthur on Feb 4, 1996, to head the drafting of a new Japanese constitution at the conclusion of WWII. He was responsible for the inclusion of Article 9, which stipulated Japan's renouncement of war and any threat or use of force to settle disputes.

Paper stockade: lawyers in Japan

Article Abstract:

Japan retains the tightest restrictions on foreign lawyers operating there of any country in the world. Japan's trading partners are trying to get some of the restrictions lifted, claiming they affect free trade. Japan claims they are to keep the country litigation-free.

Law is practiced much differently in Japan, which has only 11.5 lawyers for every 100,000 people. There is much less litigation in Japan also, partially because the few lawyers who manage to pass the bar there do not work on a contingency basis.
