Bangkok's little India: a thriving Chinese textile center drew subcontinent's migrants

Article Abstract:

A diverse and thriving Indian community contributes disproportionately to the culture and economy of the textile district of Bangkok. Many are Sikhs from the Punjab, supposedly descended from an enterprising trader who arrived in 1884. More arrived in the 1940s, as fighting broke out in the Punjab over the separation of India and Pakistan. Now nearly 100,000 Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, and others live peacefully in the renowned textile district.
