Earthquake power outages shackle Taiwan's economy

An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 on the Richter scale struck Taiwan on Sep 21, 1999, leaving more than 2,000 people dead and causing widespread power outages. Rescue teams from several countries are helping to look for survivors. The central bank and many local companies promise contributions to assist displaced victims.

Journey across strait puts Chinese illegals in limbo
