China delves into venture capital--its own way: state-funded and -run struggle to emulate their western counterparts

Article Abstract:

The city-owned Shanghai Venture Capital Corp. is trying to be a Western-style venture capital company, but it operates in a world of privilege, where it must adopt the attitude of a private company in order to meet its mandate while the government exerts influence. The company has managed to leverage the government-supplied 600 mil yuan ($72.5 mil) into two billion yuan, but its investment options still remain limited to just the earliest stage business ventures. The company's investment efforts and relationship with Singapore-based Venture TDF Co. Ltd. re discussed.

Region's venture companies are poised to pounce

While many venture capitalists are waiting for the economy to improve before making further major investments, some firms are continuing to put money into good business ideas. Intel Capital plans to invest an additional $100 million in 30 to 40 Asian companies by the end of the year, and 3i has invested $130 million in Vantec, a logistics business of Nissan Motor Co.
