China: keep probing for truth

Article Abstract:

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao has endorsed the principles of an article which promoted the seeking after truth as verified in practice. Hu was speaking on the 20th anniversary of publication of the article in 1978. The original publication had a deep effect on the Chinese nation as it said there was no revealed truth from any source, including Chairman Mao Zedong, and that individuals should test all philosophies against experience. The 20th anniversary speech from a young, upcoming politician is also significant as it indicates the future political development of China.

China adds to Taipei's isolation

Article Abstract:

The establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Africa has further added to Taiwan's international isolation. Taiwan is recognized by only 29 countries, most of which are economically and politically unimportant. The world's most influential nations prefer to maintain diplomatic relations with China, leaving Taiwan isolated and with links to micro-states such as Nevis, Nauru and Tuvalu. Taiwan's survival relies on maintaining its economic, rather than diplomatic ties, with the world's major players, including the US and Western Europe.

Beijing forum: positive move; China, too, is attempting to improve the situation of women

Article Abstract:

Much of the criticism aimed at China over the UN's Beijing conference on women and the related meetings is justified, but much is also unfair. China certainly has human-rights problems, and women are still treated as inferior in many ways, but the government has a good record in its treatment of women. The problem is largely a social one, grounded in tradition, though the one-child policy has indirectly led to disproportionate infanticide of girls. The government must strive to make women more valuable to families and to the state.
