China privatizations beat a retreat

Article Abstract:

Since the failure of the Shandong International Power Development Co.'s privatization and the collapse of investment company Guangdong International Trust and Investment Corp (GITIC), other Chinese privatizations have been put on hold. These companies include Beijing Capital International Airport, Shanghai Municipal Electric Power, China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), and China World Trade Centre. Bankers will most likely try for domestic listings or will wait out the ailing international markets.

Hungary's Raba for sale

Article Abstract:

Employees of Hungarian truck manufacturer Raba will have the option to purchase a maximum of 10% of the company's shares, which are currently owned by the state, at preferential prices. The government plans to place 26-30% of Raba privately with financial and strategic investors in an initial phase of privatisation. The sale is due to take place in Sep 1997 at the earliest. There are also plans to privatise national electricity concern Magyar Villamos Muvek by Jun 1997.

The privatization of Empresa Nacional de Electricidad (Endesa) by the Spanish government, which owns over 63% of Endesa's stock is discussed in detail. The remainder of Endesa's stock has been in private hands for several years.
