How the experts see it

Article Abstract:

Asian stock markets have seen price falls, and while this could represent a buying opportunity, prices could drop further. American Express Asset Management's Elizabeth Tran sees a need to wait before investing, while APC Asset Management's Robin How would wait for less time and emphasises the need to be selective. Economic policy will have an impact and real interest rates are likely to be high in the Philippines and Indonesia. India has performed well as a fringe market and earnings appear to be improving in India.

How the experts see it

Article Abstract:

A panel of experts has assessed Asian financial markets and they vary in their levels of optimism. APC Asset Management managing director. Robin How, has become more optimistic that a turnaround is apparent in the economy after a drop in export growth. The devaluation of the Thai baht is a cause for concern as are economic problems in South Korea. Some experts find Philippine mid-caps attractive. Other opportunities include India, which could see a bull market.

The review contest

Article Abstract:

Asia's stock markets are likely to show very mixed performance in 1998, and this means that investors will have to focus on capital preservation, rather than on making large profits. Investors will probably focus on defensive stocks, cash and bonds, and will avoid investing aggressively in equities. The Hong Kong stock market may avoid the worst of the uncertainty on Asian stock markets, and it may also be worth considering investing in Singapore.
