Venetian discoveries

Article Abstract:

The artwork on display at the 1999 Venice Biennale exhibition is generally mediocre, but the 1999 exhibition has architectural interest. More than 100 artists display examples of their work, which may or may not have been created especially for the exhibition. A few pieces, including a video presentation by Doug Aitken and a series of paintings of suburbia by Howard Arkley, have great impact. However, the architectural interest is in the fact that buildings within the great naval base, the Arsenale, are open to the public for the first time as part of the exhibition space.
