China sets telecom limits

Article Abstract:

China has directed its state telecommunications firms to acquire local and has prohibited new foreign ventures to manufacture GSM-standard mobile-telephone equipment in the country. The move was designed to reduce imports and boost China's domestic economy. The new regulation is likely to peeve telecommunications companies that have yet to establish a major presence in the country.

EU to Push Majority Ownership of Mobile-Phone Ventures

Article Abstract:

On May 11th 2000 Pascal Lamy, a trade negotiator for the European Union (EU), said China must permit foreign mobile-phone operators to claim at least 50% of a stake in joint ventures. The EU was China's only major trading partner that hadn't signed off on China's entry into the World Trade Organization, and the comment came a week before formal negotiations began.

WTO deal in Doha shows new climate in trade world

Article Abstract:

Developing countries, led by India, have won major concessions from U.S. and European trade representatives at the latest World Trade Organization negotiations. The lengthy and tense negotiations resulted in a new round of trade talks. The agenda will include limitations on anti-dumping laws, reduction of farm subsidies, and limitations on pharmaceutical patents.
