China's scrip-starved investors

Article Abstract:

Chinese investors are bidding up to eight times the par value of Rbl 10,000 for Russian Far East vouchers. They are taking advantage of Russia's effort to solve its cash problems, and are buying the vouchers at discounts of 30-60% under par. China controls approximately 20% of total foreign investment in the Russian Far East and is second only after Japan. Some Russian companies such as Far Eastern Shipping and Primorskya Shipping are already going public.

Sleeping giant: China makes a late entry as exporter of workers

Article Abstract:

China is home to the largest labor force in the world and has finally joined the ranks of labor exporting countries. Its delayed entry in the labor market is primarily due to its policy to restrict Chinese migration to other countries. Improved relations with the Commonwealth of Independent States has contributed largely to the increasing migration of Chinese workers into the former Soviet Union.
