Hostile undercurrents: dispute deepens over use of Mekong River water

Article Abstract:

Thailand's deteriorating relationship with Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam is caused by its protective stance towards its Mekong River water irrigation project. Thailand has set preconditions in the readmission of Cambodia into the Mekong Committee, thereby allowing the continuing existence of the Interim Mekong Committee established in 1978. The move is designed to protect Thai interests in the Mekong River which will be imperiled by Cambodia's return into the committee. Cambodia's reentry would mean the reactivation of the 1975 clause providing for each member country's right to veto projects.

Superyachts ahoy!

Article Abstract:

Thailand's Concorde Yachts has entered the world market for production of superyachts. Mirabella 40 is a high-tech, US$10 million, sailing yacht being manufactured. Thailand's Board of Investment allowed Concorde to import the fittings for the Mirabella series duty-free since they are re-exported as a finished boat. Thailand also has the advantage of cheap, skilled labour and proximity to the teak forests of Cambodia, Burma and Vietnam. Since less than 10 such expensive boats are demanded worldwide annually, Concorde is exploring potential Asian markets.
