China's voice in colony is popular despite blunders

Article Abstract:

Most Hong Kong government officials and business leaders consider Lu Ping, the head of China's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, as voice of moderation in the runup to the handover in 1997. Lu recently shocked many by suggesting that Hong Kong civil servants declare their allegiance to the Chinese-sponsored provisional legislature. His criticism of democracy-minded Hong Kong officials has also elicited protests and demonstrations. However, Lu remains a popular figure in Hong Kong and many regard him as a positive influence.

Rising joblessness sparks backlash against migrants

Article Abstract:

Unemployment, virtually eliminated for the past nine years, is threatening residents of the Crown Colony anew. Government data shows the jobless rate reached 3% in 2nd qtr. 1995, up from 2.8% during the 1st qtr. and 2% in the last three months of 1994. The figures also indicate a longer period of unemployment for those affected. Blue-collar workers have been the hardest hit, leading to a clamor for the repatriation of alien migrant workers.
