City of Hanoi offers decent accommodations as hotels mushroom, but prices are still high

Article Abstract:

Hotels in Hanoi, Vietnam, are being renovated or built in response to increasing tourist arrivals. Amenities being offered are still not on par with those being offered by hotels in other regions and prices are still relatively high. However, this situation will soon improve, as international firms such as South Korea's Daewoo Corp. are opening five-star hotels in the city. The only danger in this trend is the possible overcapacity once hotel development starts to exceed demand.

Bill Clinton and Jiang Zemin will meet at the APEC summit

Article Abstract:

The annual summit meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group will be held on the first week of Sep 1999 in Auckland, New Zealand. The success of the APEC summit will depend on the outcome of the meeting between presidents Bill Clinton and Jiang Zemin concerning China's application to join the World Trade Organization. While the governments of both countries seem willing to restart talks on China's membership in the WTO, political issues, such as Taiwan's announcement that it wanted a relationship with China based on a state-to-state basis could be detrimental to the outcome of the talks.
