Article Abstract:
Yunnan province, China, has the most serious drug problem in China, and it is on a key route for heroin from Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. Around 400 drug dealers are executed in Yunnan annually, and aid has been sent to Mayanmar to persuade farmers to move out of opium production to other cash crops. The province is also focusing on seeking to cure addicts, who are initially sent to a detoxification center. The center uses discipline, herbal remedies, and counselling, and some inmates pay to come off drugs. There is also an effort at education and community care when the inmates go home.
