Making a comeback

Article Abstract:

Demand for flightsat the Kimpo airport in Seoul, South Korea, has increased in early 1999, in contrast to the previous year, which indicates that the economy is starting to recover. Stock prices are rising and interest rates are falling, and there is a forecast for a 2% increase in gross domestic product for 1999, following a contraction of 5.5% for 1998. There is still concern about high levels of unemployment, and the weakness of the banking system. There is also a need to tackle the budget deficit, according to former central bank governor, Cho Soon.

Tung and the custard tarts

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong economy is shrinking, and retail sales are dropping, while chief executive, Tung Chee-hwa, is seen as part of a less accountable style of government than before the handover to China. Tung's plan to provide public housing has met with opposition from major developers, and a drop in real estate prices has also hampered the project. Major initiatives have been taken up with only limited consultation with the Legislative Council.
