Cnooc drops offer for Unocal, exposing U.S.-Chinese tensions

China National Offshore Oil Corp. has withdrawn its bid for the petroleum company Unocal Corp., revealing Sino-American diplomatic tensions and the struggle of Chinese companies as they learn to compete in the global economy. The withdrawal by China National Offshore Oil Corp. means the acquisition of Unocal Corp. will most likely be won by Chevron Corp.
