Article Abstract:

The Internet is often used by designers, but other forms of communication such as simple modem links and ISDN, are popular. Networks are a way of transferring ideas, and the better the network, the better the communication. ModelCity Philadelphia is to be a complete virtual city, and architects are building up a database to contain information on all aspects of the city. It is scheduled for completion in 2000, in time for the AIA Philadelphia conference, and is a combination of data gathering and engineering technology.

Article Abstract:

There is currently wide variation in the use of office technology in the UK construction industry. Some firms use latest CAD and office automation systems, for example, while others do not have even a basic computer. It is likely that in the future only companies which are prepared to invest in latest technology will be truly competitive. Electronic mail will play a key role in improving communications, as will the Internet, while new workflow systems will improve document handling.
