Colombians look for change

Article Abstract:

The new Colombian president. Andres Pastrana, promises political reform and an end to civil violence. Pastrana faces a number of problems, including corruption, terrorism by paramilitaries and guerillas, and an increase in unemployment. Interest rates have been raised to support the Colombian peso. Pastrana has promised tax cuts and to tackle tax evasion. He is seeking to negotiate with guerilla groups, and his election has been welcomed by the US. He will need support from the Liberals, who hold 60% of Congress seats.

Valdivieso recently announced he plans to run for president of Colombia. The election will be held in May 1998, and Valdivieso will stress his integrity and anti-corruption platform. In Argentina, former cabinet minister Domingo Cavallo formed a new party and is running for Congress.
