Coming to America

Article Abstract:

Many US companies with strong links with Asia are being negatively affected by the economic crisis in that region. There is weak demand for American-made goods in Asia, and the US balance of trade is deteriorating. However, the US investment community has largely ignored the impact of difficulties in Asia on the domestic economy, and ordinary Americans have also failed to take much interest in developments in Asia. Some observers believe that US companies must now take decisive action to protect themselves from further damage caused by the Asian economic crisis.

Hard luck

Article Abstract:

Asian-American people residing in the US are often mistakenly categorised as well-educated high-achievers from middle and upper-class families even though a large number of them are very poor. Over one million Asian-Americans are below the poverty line. Many working-class families battle against the odds to earn a living, says Lao-American community volunteer Chanthala Kaignavorgsa. Educational achievement amongst the Hmong children is particularly low.

Good morning, Vancouver!

Article Abstract:

Ethnic groups actually form a majority of the population in Vancouver, Canada, when taken together, according to Hanson Lau, who hosts a radio talk-show in Cantonese for Chinese immigrants on AM1320 CHMB. He often deals with Asian-related issues, and returns to Hong Kong, where he was born, at least once a year. He is very keen to encourage assimilation of Chinese-Canadians, but recognizes that many must retain links with Asia for economic reasons.
