Rethinking China

Article Abstract:

Caterpillar Inc. is reconsidering its business interests in China after a joint venture with Shanghai Diesel Engine Company Ltd. resulted in losses of $3.6 million in 1996. Caterpillar had anticipated large sales to local customers but this did not happen. Other foreign investors have had similar experiences in China because Chinese partners have proved to be difficult, hapless or without the necessary finances to be effective. Some firms are buying controlling stakes in Chinese firms while others are cutting back or leaving altogether. Different business attitudes have also caused problems.

Under new management

Article Abstract:

Tsingtao Brewery, the third-largest brewer in China, has seen considerable financial difficulties recently as its market share has declined and there has been growing criticism of its managers. This has prompted the Chinese government to install a new management team at the company, headed by general manager Peng Zuoyi. He will focus on expanding the company's market share, and as part of this the company has set up its own distribution concern to sell directly rather than through agents.
