Buying binge

Article Abstract:

Asian companies in financial difficulties have traditionally been unwilling to sell out to foreign investors. However, this situation is now beginning to change as the region's economic crisis continues. It is becoming difficult to obtain finance locally, and many Asian concerns are therefore seeking foreign investment for restructuring or merely to remain in business. Foreign investors are being attracted to Asia by very low prices. Foreign purchases in Asia were worth $12 billion in the first half of 1998, almost triple the figure for the whole of 1997.

Rising by degrees

Article Abstract:

Indonesian-Chinese businessman Ted Sioeng has arranged many degrees from American M&N University and Iowa Wesleyan College for his Asian business partners. It appears that he is using the degrees to impress people who can bring benefits to his business activities. There are also indications that he has political motivations too, as his clients have included a number of people who are either mainland-Chinese business leaders or have close links with Beijing, China.
