Devaluing the dong

Article Abstract:

The State Bank of Vietnam has allowed the dong to slide by 5.3% against the US dollar. It is hoped that this will overcome a serious shortage of dollars in the inter-bank market and boost the competitiveness of Vietnam's exports. However, experts believe that the dong is still overvalued. The government may be unwilling to devalue the dong further, as this could fuel inflation and make it hard to repay dollar loans. The World Bank predicts that Vietnam's GDP will rise by 5% in 1998, although Vietnam itself has set an 8% target for GDP growth.
