Putting his foot in it: Turkey

Article Abstract:

Erbakan made a state visit to Libya on Oct 6, 1996, but his meeting with Muammar Qaddafi caused problems back in Turkey after it was reported that Qadhafi urged Turkey to create an independent state for the Kurds. The comment could weaken Erbakan's stature at home.

Not all Islamists are violent, anti-democratic, authoritarian or puritanical, and many moderate political Islamists are speaking up. Turkey, which just elected an Islamist government, is discussed, along with Iran and other countries.

Turkey tilts eastward: the Islamist-led government of Necmettin Erbakan offers no reason for alarm - so far

Article Abstract:

Turkey has elected an Islamist prime minister, and Westerns are worried about the possibility of strong alliances between Turkey and Iran and other Middle Eastern neighbors. Erbakan appears to be a moderate, but time will tell.
