Article Abstract:

The Indonesian banking industry is in need of reforms, and the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency head has been replaced by Cacuk Sudarijanto. seen by observers to be both honest and efficient. The central bank head may also be replaced due to his poor performance as head of a central bank, though he is also seen as honest. Bank of Indonesia governor, Sjahril Sabirin, has to be dismissed by parliament, and it is not clear that this will be done. Lack of change could mean that the central bank will not be effective.

Always right?

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's private banking system faces problems, but the state banks also have serious debt problems, accounting for 40% of total funds needed to repay depositors. Bank Mandiri has been set up from four state banks and is being restructured by Deutsche Bank. Specialists providing assistance include McKinsey and Andersen Consulting. Indonesians tend to have more than one bank account due to the lack of retail services on offer at any given bank.

Commanding depths

Article Abstract:

The state has nationalized a number of enterprises in Indonesia, as part of an effort to reform the banking industry. Other Asian countries have also taken over failed banks, but the problems of the Indonesian banking industry were more serious, and assets from outside banking have been acquired by the Indonesian government. The government plans to sell these assets. The government effectively controls industrial assets estimated at around a quarter of Indonesia's gross domestic product.
