E-bonds, licensed to kill

Online investors have tended to prefer equities to bonds, and there are some obstacles to automation of the bond market, though moves are being made in this direction. Wall Street companies want to enter the online bond market while it is still small, in contrast to their delay in realising the importance of online stockbroking. Electronic trading could make the bond market more efficient, but conservative attitudes could be a major obstacle

Article Abstract:

Traditional financial companies have tended to be late in developing Internet businesses, and there is concern that competition could arise from this source, as has occurred with Internet stockbrokers. New products can be created through the Internet, and online bankers can offer 'integrated personal financial management'. Clients may seek access to banks in different ways, by phone and through the branch as well as online. Internal politics may affect the development of online services, for example if sales people see their livelihood threatened.
