Commission supports Europe-wide regulation

Article Abstract:

EU Transport Commissioner Loyola de Palacio said the European Commission is considering the establishment of common standards for privatized air traffic control systems. According to de Palacio, the regulations would reflect the trends towards privatization of air traffic management services, the intensifying competition and the significant effect of financial and commercial imperatives. An EU high level group is expected to present a report and proposals on the matter by June 2000.

The UK's National Air Traffic Services will be partially privatized, with 51% of the agency to be sold to a strategic partner and employees. The privatization is aimed at securing long-term investment of $1.55 billion over 10 years. The plan also calls for the separation of air traffic control service from safety regulation, which will remain under the purview of the Civil Aviation Authority.
