Staring down the barrel of the regulatory gun

Article Abstract:

European utility companies have faced significant regulatory restrictions on their merger and acquisition plans so far in 2000. The US Federal Trade Commission opposed BP Amoco's $26.8 billion purchase of Atlantic Richfield Co, while in Germany the Bundeskartellamt is to closely scrutinize the merger of RWE with VEW and the merger of Veba with Viag. The French parliament has undertaken a second reading of legislation that will give the country's largest companies the right to select their electricity supplier.
