Article Abstract:

There are different approaches to writing about fashion, such as a populist approach which focuses on consumption, and a contextual approach which seeks to locate the clothing in a moment in time and assess what the clothing means in that context. Holly Brubach could be called a contexual writer, whereas Dodie Kazanijian focuses more on consumption. Bruback assesses bathing wear in ther context of a number of famous writings, and is classed with art writers, while Kazanijian's writings are to be found with works on beauty and self help.

LVMH has increased its stake in Gucci, and this could lead to a bid. The luxuries market has been hit by a drop in demand from Japan and other Asian countries. Consolidation could help ease the industry's problems, and companies can be acquired more cheaply when business is bad. Takeovers can, however, create problems in the fashion industry since there may be few synergies and there is a danger of loss of image. Personalities may be important for clients, and there may be little scope for cutting costs.
