Send Elian home

Article Abstract:

Elian Gonzalez is a six-year-old Cuban boy who was found off the coastof Florida where he had been shipwrecked, and his mother had died, in Nov 1999. His father wants him to return to Cuba, and his relations in Miami want him to stay there. The Immigration and Naturalization Service argues that he should return. There are demonstrations calling for his return to Cuba, and he would be well looked after there and have a good education. The US trade embargo has hit ordinary Cubans and put the US in the role of the enemy. Many US companies, and over half the US population want relations between Cuba and the US to be normalized. The boy should go back to his father as an act of kindness.

The curse of Elian

Article Abstract:

Elian Gonzalez is a six-year-old Cuban boy who was rescued off the Miami coast, and his US relatives want him to stay there, while his father wants him back in Cuba. The legal battle has been protracted, and Miami Cubans have taken up the case as a political symbol. Yet Miami is becoming less influenced by Cuban exiles as fewer Latinos come from Cuba. There has also been a change in US attitudes toward Cuba, which have improved enough for the affair of Elian Gonazalez not to inflict much damage.

The tragedy of Elian

Article Abstract:

Elian Gonzalez is a Cuban child who is the subject of a custody battle and a campaign by Cuban-Americans who want him to stay in the US. Cuban-Americans have been successful and have invested in Miami, rather than sending funds to relatives in Cuba. They aim to overthrow the Cuban government, but this is less true of recent arrivals, who are more like other economic migrants. Cuban exceptionalism is becoming less important, and moderation is needed for Miami the thrive.
