Sorting out school choice

Article Abstract:

A school voucher program has been shut down in Cleveland, Ohio, while Judge Solomon Oliver investigates whether the program goes against the separation of state and church in the US constitution. Maine and Vermont do not permit public funds to be used for religious schools. There is increased interest in voucher programs due to concern about US public schools, since vouchers are seen as a way of improving standards. Limited data suggests that they may be effective, though numbers are too small to draw firm conclusions.

Teaching the teachers

Article Abstract:

Brazil aims to boost the quality of teaching in schools, as well as increasing numbers of secondary school places, and this involves training more teachers. Teachers' pay has been increased, but it is still low, and this makes it difficult to attract graduates to the profession. Efforst are being made to train teachers already working in state schools. Approved textbooks and handbooks on teaching are also being sent to public sector schools. There is some opposition from labor unions representing teachers.
