The look of the modern sublime

Article Abstract:

Andreas Gursky and Thomas Struth are examples of new photographers from Germany. They both studied with Bernd Becher in Dusseldorf, at the Kunstakademie. Becher favored a less personal view than that of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Both photographers tend to use color, and they take a compassionate approach, though in different ways. They each have an exhibition in Feb and Mar 1999, with Struth showing in the Centre National de la Photographie, Paris, France, and Gursky in the Serpentine Gallery, London, England.

Man of the moment

Article Abstract:

Henri Cartier-Bresson is a photographer who argues that the organization of forms and significance of moments are what photographers should seek. He refuses to crop photographs. Many of his important works were taken while he was living in Mexico, Spain and Italy from 1932 to 1935. He co-founded the co-operative photo agency, Magnum, after the 1939-1945 war. He will be 90-years-old in Aug 1998, and has made drawings rather than taking photos in the 20 years to 1998.
