Computers that talk and listen: has the time finally come?

Article Abstract:

Advances over the last three years in speech recognition technology in user-friendliness and time and work-saving potential imply major potential for expansion in international business. The largest companies such as AT&T and IBM are the ones which stand to make money from such speech technology, according to one observer. European firms with large investments in speech recognition research include Philips of the Netherlands and Siemens of West Germany. Survey research suggests that the world market in voice recognition technology is already $1 billion, and should grow to $3 billion by the early part of the 1990s.

Statistics indicate that the most popular laptop models are Toshiba, which has a 30% market share, Compaq, which has a 24% market share, and Zenith, which has a 10% market share. Currently in 1990, laptop sales make up eight percent of all computer sales in Europe compared to one percent in 1987.
