Comrades in arms; Russian rapprochement could boost China's clout

Article Abstract:

Russia is taking steps towards rapprochement with China that could signal changes that may alter the balance of power in the Far East. Russian President Boris Yeltsin recently signed a number of agreements with Chinese officials on a range of issues including stabilizing his country's border with China. Such a move would allow China to redirect its military focus towards Southeast and East Asia. One analyst observed that Russia and China have been forced to renew ties after the US emerged as the world's only superpower.

Fear of the dragon

Article Abstract:

The country has 1.2 billion people and an army of 2.9 million; defense spending estimates range from $10 billion and $50 billion.
