Concern that new health and safety laws will apply to current projects

Article Abstract:

The proposed Construction (Design and Management)(CONDAM) health and safety regulations are likely to be introduced in 1994 and may have serious implications for projects that are already underway. The Health and Safety Executive admits the regulations will be applied to projects where design work is not completed and may force architects to change their designs to incorporate a site safety plan. This would increase costs but some architects believe it would also enable architects to take a leading role as planning supervisors.

Research needed to fix new fire safety guidelines

Article Abstract:

Extensive research is still required to ensure that fire engineering reaches a stage where it is suitable for use in the design of buildings. Research in which groups of people are involved is looking at the main stages of evacuation, focusing on pre-movement time, which is the period before a person responds to an alarm, response time and exit time. Other areas of research include fire initiation and development, passive fire protection and risk assessment.

Architects' workloads on the rise

Article Abstract:

Architects workloads appear to be improving, in spite of a reported fall in pre-tax profits for both manufacturers and contractors, according to a workload survey. New commissions are up 37% and the retail sector has shown the most dramatic rise of the last quarter. Some contractors are withdrawing from traditional contracting as they have been forced to accept more risk by more sophisticated clients.
